FPDynamics Awarded Canadian Defence Contract for Tactical ISR Uncrewed Aircraft Systems for up to 5,000 Systems
Initial award of 100 systems, with options for up to 4,900 more, under a Government of Canada procurement framework valued at up to C$25 million. The award is FPDynamics' first contract through the Defence Drone Initiative marketplace.
TORONTO, ON, October 2, 2026. FPDynamics Advanced Robotics Ltd. today announced that it has been awarded a five-year contract by the Government of Canada to supply Low-Cost Tactical Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) Uncrewed Aircraft Systems to the Canadian Armed Forces.
The contract covers an initial order of 100 systems, with options for the Government of Canada to acquire up to 4,900 additional systems over the contract term, a pathway to as many as 5,000 systems in total. The procurement framework sets a combined value of up to C$25 million across the suppliers selected under it.
FPDynamics was selected through a competitive request for proposals under the Defence Drone Initiative (DDI), the Government of Canada's program for acquiring and fielding uncrewed systems for the Canadian Armed Forces. The RFP was the first issued under Stream 1 of the DDI marketplace, and the award converts the supplier qualification FPDynamics announced in August into a fielded contract.
The low-cost tactical ISR requirement is the first of the DDI's six priority use cases: small, affordable uncrewed aircraft that give tactical units their own local intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance picture, bought in volume, fielded quickly, and adapted in the field as operators report back. The Government of Canada's framework sets a maximum price per system and a combined envelope of C$25 million across the selected suppliers. FPDynamics' contracted pricing is commercially confidential.
Everything about FP-X was designed for exactly this order: a simple, low-cost aircraft that can be built in volume in Canada and still grow with the mission, taking on smarter capabilities and multiple payloads as operators need them. One hundred systems is the proving tranche. The options are the reason we built a production line instead of a prototype. We intend to earn every one of them.

Why This Matters
The Defence Drone Initiative was launched in July 2026 by the Department of National Defence and the Defence Investment Agency to replace slow, case-by-case drone procurement with a standing marketplace of pre-qualified Canadian suppliers. Qualification opened the door; this RFP is the first time the marketplace has been used to buy aircraft at scale. The structure of the award, a firm order of 100 followed by options for 4,900 more, lets the Canadian Armed Forces put the initial systems through operational use before committing to full-rate fielding. That is the DDI working as designed: test, adapt, then scale.
For FPDynamics the contract is the third step in a sequence that began with the IDEaS Drone Surge contest, where the FP-X design won Rounds 1 and 2 and moved into prototype development, and continued with DDI supplier qualification under Stream 1 and additional streams in August. Drone Surge proved the design. The DDI qualified the company. This contract puts FP-X in the hands of Canadian operators.
Built in Canada, at Volume
FP-X was designed for surge manufacturing. Surge production was a requirement of DND's Drone Surge contest, and the team treated it as the first constraint rather than the last: a new, much simpler aircraft, low-cost, and built to be made fast and in volume in Canada. That capability comes from the combination of materials and design choices behind FP-X, an approach that is unique to FPDynamics and highly scalable, and one the company is patenting. The aircraft stays modular, ready to take on more advanced sensors, autonomy, and payloads as missions require, which is the DNA of FPDynamics: advanced sensing, operation in GNSS-denied environments, and AI-driven autonomy.
The optional systems are at the Government of Canada's discretion and are not committed purchases.
